The governor ceremonially signed legislation on May 14 that sets new safety guidelines for high-wake recreation activities, such as wake surfing, on Indiana’s public freshwater lakes, according to State Representatives David Abbott and Tony Isa.
The new law, House Enrolled Act 1062, aims to protect shorelines and enhance safety by introducing clear rules for wake surfing. The legislation prohibits wake surfing between sunset and sunrise due to reduced visibility and the increased risk of accidents. Additionally, it restricts wake surfing on smaller lakes unless a speed exemption is granted by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. On lakes with existing speed exemptions, current rules will remain in effect.
“Indiana lakes are a shared resource, and this new law brings a balanced approach to keeping them safe and enjoyable,” said David Abbott, who serves on the House Natural Resources Committee. “By setting commonsense parameters for wake surfing, especially during low-visibility hours, we’re limiting unnecessary risks while protecting boaters. House Enrolled Act 1062 is about making sure that all Hoosiers can spend time on the water with fewer hazards.”
Tony Isa said the measure was designed to help everyone safely enjoy Indiana’s lakes during peak summer months while also safeguarding shoreline property and promoting boater safety. “This legislation puts safety first for everyone on the water,” Isa said. “By addressing high-wake activities during risk-heavy times, we’re taking a proactive step to prevent accidents and protect Hoosiers enjoying our lakes.”
House Enrolled Act 1062 will take effect July 1, 2026. More information about other laws passed during the legislative session can be found at iga.in.gov.
