Gov. Mike Braun has ceremonially signed a new law aimed at safeguarding parental rights in Indiana. The legislation, co-sponsored by State Rep. Matt Commons (R-Williamsport), addresses concerns about government intrusion into decisions regarding children’s upbringing, education, and health care.

State Rep. Commons emphasized the importance of this legislation, known as Senate Enrolled Act 143, stating that it provides necessary protections for parents to retain authority over their children’s lives. “As parents, we need to be the decision maker when it comes to the best interest of our children,” Commons said. “This new law will protect a parent’s right to raise their children without a school or government entity needlessly interfering.”

The law restricts government entities such as school districts and agencies from advising or directing children to withhold information from their parents unless legally required by law or court order.

State Rep. Matt Commons represents House District 13, which includes Benton and Warren counties and parts of Fountain, Jasper, Montgomery, Newton, Tippecanoe, and White counties.
