Last week, Governor Mike Braun held a ceremonial signing for a bill sponsored by State Representative Danny Lopez (R-Carmel) aimed at strengthening Indiana’s nursing workforce.

The legislation, Senate Enrolled Act 176, responds to recent declines in enrollment in baccalaureate nursing programs after two decades of growth, as reported by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing. Indiana is expected to face a shortage of over 73,000 licensed practical nurses in the next ten years. The new law allows high school students to enroll in state-accredited nursing programs, enabling them to earn college credits early and gain professional experience sooner.

“Education and training should move at the speed students do, and that’s particular important as we look to move more Hoosiers into the nursing profession,” Lopez said. “Efforts like this help build our talent pipeline and get Hoosier students interested in high-demand fields here in our state.”

Several Ivy Tech campuses offer pathways for students seeking an associate of science in nursing degree or transitioning through ASN programs. Other campuses provide practical nursing technical certificate programs. Additional details are available at IvyTech.edu.

The law also increases the number of members on the State Board of Nursing by two, updating qualifications and expanding representation to address changes within health care.

SEA 176 passed with bipartisan support during the 2025 legislative session.
