Leslie Kesler, a coach at Benjamin Harrison School 2, recently accompanied her student Jude Hawk to New York City for the 2025 NBA Math Hoops Global Championship. The event took place from June 24-27 and was filled with competitions and visits to significant locations like the Jackie Robinson Museum and NBA Headquarters.

Kesler expressed her excitement upon learning that Jude would represent Indianapolis Public Schools at the championship. “I knew he had the skills and sportsmanship, but seeing his hard work recognized on such a big stage made my heart soar,” she said.

During their time in New York, Jude teamed up with Andrea, a fourth grader from Maryland. They named their team Dream Weavers and demonstrated strong mental math skills and teamwork throughout the tournament. One highlight of their trip was visiting the Jackie Robinson Museum where students drafted their dream Math Hoops teams.

Jude experienced memorable moments such as walking down the NBA Draft red carpet and receiving a signed Indiana Pacers jersey from his favorite player, T.J. McConnell. “It was more than just a gift. It was a recognition of who he is and the work he’s put in,” Kesler remarked.

The championship concluded with Jude and Andrea winning their first round in overtime but falling short in the next round. Despite this, they were celebrated for their poise, teamwork, and energy.

Reflecting on Jude’s journey, Kesler noted his standout math skills and character traits like kindness, perseverance, and sportsmanship. She emphasized that programs like NBA Math Hoops help students find belonging, joy, and purpose.
