Attorney General Todd Rokita called on May 18 for Hoosiers and visitors to remain alert for signs of human trafficking as the city prepares for the 110th running of the Indianapolis 500. Rokita said large events like the Indy 500 can create opportunities that traffickers may exploit, urging people to report suspicious activity immediately.
“Big events like the Indy 500 create opportunities that human traffickers actively exploit,” said Attorney General Rokita. “We’re asking everyone to keep their eyes and ears open and speak up immediately if something doesn’t look right. It could save someone’s life.”
Events attracting hundreds of thousands of spectators often increase demand for individuals forced into commercial sex acts or labor. Common signs that someone may be a victim include living with an employer, staying in overcrowded conditions, being prevented from speaking freely, giving rehearsed answers, having identification held by others, showing physical abuse, appearing fearful or overly compliant, working long hours without pay, or being underage and involved in commercial sex.
Rokita advised anyone who suspects trafficking to contact local law enforcement or call the National Human Trafficking Hotline at 1-888-373-7888.
“The Indianapolis 500 is one of Indiana’s most treasured traditions,” Rokita said. “We all have a role in keeping it safe and protecting everyone who comes to enjoy it.”
The Attorney General’s office continues its efforts against human trafficking through programs such as the Address Confidentiality Program, which helps protect victims’ addresses from abusers.
