André Carson, U.S. Congressman representing Indiana’s 7th district since 2008, has used his social media platform to comment on the ongoing government funding negotiations in late September and early October 2025.
On September 30, Carson posted, “A government shutdown is likely happening tonight. But Republicans aren’t even in DC to negotiate. Democrats have one request: don’t take healthcare away from millions of Americans.” He continued his commentary later that day by highlighting the partisan divide on Capitol Hill: “The House floor today. On the Democratic side, seats are filled. On the Republican side – empty. Government funding expires at midnight. Republicans didn’t even show up to work.”
After government funding expired at midnight on October 1, Carson reiterated his stance regarding healthcare and Republican opposition: “Funding for the federal government expired at midnight on Oct 1. Republicans refused to extend tax credits that give 22 million Americans health insurance. I’m fighting to save healthcare with my fellow Democrats – because your health and your life are worth fighting for.”
Carson’s statements reflect a broader debate in Congress over federal spending and healthcare policy as a possible shutdown approached and ultimately occurred at the start of October 2025.
André Carson has represented Indiana’s 7th District in Congress since replacing Julia Carson in 2008. Prior to his tenure in Congress, he served on the Indianapolis City-County Council from 2007 to 2008. Born in Indianapolis in 1974, Carson holds a BA from Concordia University Wisconsin and continues to reside in Indianapolis.
