André Carson, U.S. Congressman representing Indiana’s 7th district since 2008, recently used his social media platform to address several issues affecting Indianapolis and the nation. In a series of posts between February 23 and February 25, Carson highlighted local youth initiatives, national political decisions, and federal immigration enforcement.
On February 23, Carson promoted an annual event for young people in Indianapolis: “It’s almost here! Every year, my Youth Opportunities Fair connects Indy’s young people to summer jobs, internships, and other enriching opportunities. Attendance is FREE and all ages are welcome. Learn more at https://t.co/LPpvgjqsU9 https://t.co/wIMBRcvwmi”.
The following day, Carson announced his decision not to attend the State of the Union address by then-President Donald Trump. He wrote on February 24: “I will not be attending Trump’s State of the Union.
The American people already know what the state of our union is. It is marked by frustration, rising costs, and deep exhaustion. Families are stretched thin by higher prices. Communities are disturbed by fatal immigration”.
On February 25, Carson addressed reports regarding a potential new detention facility in Indianapolis: “ICE is considering Indianapolis for a new detention facility.
Here’s my message to ICE: you’re not welcome.
I’ve repeatedly voted against ICE funding under Trump’s cruel regime. Government funding should be used for housing, combatting food deserts, and improving our”.
Carson has represented Indiana’s 7th District in Congress since succeeding Julia Carson in 2008; he previously served on the Indianapolis City-County Council from 2007 to 2008. Born in Indianapolis in 1974 and currently residing there at age 48, Carson holds a BA from Concordia University Wisconsin (2003).
