Ranking Member Mike Braun expressed serious concerns during the Social Security Hearing regarding the current state of Social Security services for older adults and individuals with disabilities. Braun highlighted the pressing issues faced by beneficiaries and their families, emphasizing the need for immediate action to address the challenges.

Braun pointed out the significant customer service crisis within the Social Security Administration, noting the billions of dollars lost in overpayments and the distressing delays and backlogs impacting individuals in need. He stressed, "We are not keeping Social Security’s promise."

The Ranking Member also raised specific concerns about the Windfall Elimination Provision and Government Pension Offset, which he stated unfairly penalize retirees from public service careers. Braun urged the passage of the Social Security Fairness Act to eliminate these provisions and prevent further cuts to benefits.

Furthermore, Braun highlighted the complexity of the current system, stating that confusing regulations contribute to overpayments, further burdening beneficiaries. He shared a personal experience from Indiana, where his office faced challenges in resolving a disability case for a mother of a son with Down Syndrome, emphasizing that the issue lies in basic customer service rather than funding.

Regarding efficiency and innovation, Braun addressed the need for practical steps to enhance customer service, such as implementing e-signatures on forms. He acknowledged Commissioner O’Malley's efforts in promoting efficiency but emphasized the long road ahead in addressing the existing challenges while safeguarding the interests of beneficiaries and taxpayers.

In conclusion, Braun underscored the importance of fiscal responsibility in ensuring the sustainability of Social Security services, stating, "If we don’t get our fiscal house in order, we won’t keep our promise to millions of beneficiaries and future generations."
